In the centre of the image is the IC 3583, an irregular galaxy 30 million light-years from Earth in the constellation of Virgo.  A bar-shaped structure composed of stars appears to be running through the centre. IC 3583 is thought to be gravitationally interacting with the spiral-shaped galaxy— Messier 90 which lies some 60 million light-years from Earth. The pairing of the two is known as Arp 76, one of the 338 galaxies in the catalog of peculiar galaxies— Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies- produced by Halton Arp, the American astronomer.
