Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a group of disorders characterized by easy bruising, loose joints, skin hyperelasticity and weakness of tissues. These disorders are inherited and result from faulty connective tissue which affects the skin, tendons, muscles and blood vessels.
The Ayurvedic treatment of this condition is aimed at treating the symptoms and attempting to reverse the basic pathology of the disease. Medicines like Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Mandukparni (Centella asiatica), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Patol (Tricosanthe dioica), Patha (Cissampelos pareira), Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), Kutaj (Holarrhina antidysentrica), Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Nimba (Azadirachta indica), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Behada (Terminalia bellerica) and Draksha (Vitis vinifera) are used to improve the quality of the connective tissue which binds the skin, tendons, muscles and blood vessels. Medicines like Yashtimadhuk-Ghrut, Triphala-Ghrut, Chandan-Bala-Laxadi oil, Mahanarayan oil and Mahamash oil can be applied to the skin to reduce hyperelasticity and prevent tearing, bruising and atrophy of the skin.
Medicines like Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha, Saarivasav, Chandrakala-Ras, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu and Laxadi-Guggulu can be used to prevent fragility and easy rupture of blood vessels. Medicines like Trayodashang-Guggulu, Ashwagandharishta, Shatavari-Kalpa, Ashwagandhadi-Churna, Drakshasav, Ksheer-Bala oil, Tapyadi-Loh, Ekang-Veer-Ras and Maha-Vat-Vidhwans-Ras can be used to strengthen the skin, muscles and tendons. General tonics like Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Suvarna-Parpati, Panchamrut-Parpati, Agnitundi-Vati, Abhrak-Bhasma and Trivang-Bhasma can be used for prolonged periods in order to optimize the metabolism of tissue and thereby reduce all the symptoms of this condition.
People affected with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome need to adopt appropriate life-style modifications in order to adjust to their condition. Regular exercise in moderation is recommended in order to strengthen the muscles that support the joints and thereby minimize joint injury. Contact sports should be avoided. It is equally important to protect the skin from trauma and excessive exposure to the sun.
