Mahatma Gandhi is regarded as the Father of the Nation and his birthday, October 2nd, is a national holiday and celebrated all over the country. Gandhi was assassinated on Jan 30th 1948 by a Hindu fanatic, Nathuram Godse. Gandhi’s death was mourned all over the world. But the Hindu Mahasabha is quite the opposite, they in fact celebrate the anniversary of Gandhi’s death.
Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha celebrated Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s assassination by distributing sweets at their Meerut office. They even danced to the tune of drums and Bollywood songs to mark the occassion.
This is not a new phenomena. Pandit Ashok Sharma, national vice-president, Hindu Mahasabha said, “We have been celebrating Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary as Shaurya Divas for over five decades now. According to us, Nathuram Godse did all the good he can in his life by killing Gandhi. People might mourn the death of Gandhi, but we will always celebrate this day”.
They were stopped from installing a bust of Nathuram Godse in their office premises by the police last year.
The Hindu Mahasabha observes Republic Day as a ‘black day’ and even protested against the Indian constitution. It was formed to protect the rights of the Hindu community over a century ago. Sharma even went to say, “We do not believe in the idea of a secular Constitution. When India officially declares itself a Hindu Rashtra, Godse will be declared its hero and Gandhi’s assassination would be declared a national festival.”
