After years of saying he has no interest in joining politics, Rajinikanth just a dropped a massive hint about his political ambitions. At an event where he interacted with fans, the superstar said that to fight the “corrupt” system and “rotten” democracy in the state, “we all have to work together”. He explained that during ancient times people would drop all their responsibilities and fight when it was time for war. He asked his fans to brace themselves. “You return home, take care of your responsibilities, but when the war comes…keep a watch.”

The star, born Shivaji Rao Gaekwad, also asserted his Tamilian identity. “My fans have made me a Tamizhan. I was a Kannadiga for 23 years of my life, but for the past 44, I have been a Tamizhan. You, the fans, have made me a Tamizhan,” he said.

He thanked his fans for making him who he is today. “You made me…gave me all this fame and wealth. You Gods (Tamil fans) made me a Thamizhan (Tamil). So I am a pacha Thamizhan (true-blooded Tamil).”

A few days earlier, Rajinikanth had said he would join politics when the time is right and when God decides.

Rajinikanth also gave his views about other leaders in the state. He said M K Stalin is his good friend the best administrator but would do better if given a free hand. “Anbumani Ramadoss(youth wing president of the Pattali Makkal Katch) is well-educated, has modern thoughts… Thirumavalavan( President of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi l) is also admired a lot. Seeman (chief coordinator of Naam Tamilar Katchi) is a fighter. I was excited to listen to some of his views,” he said.

This statement comes days after BJP MP Subramanian Swamy said Rajinikanth should stay out of politics because he has no qualification and would be a disaster.

In 1996, Rajinikanth had said even God can’t save Tamil Nadu” if AIADMK was elected again. “My name has been dragged into politics for the past two decades. I am pushed to clarify during every election that I’m not affiliated to any political party,” he said at an event earlier this week.

If at all Rajinikanth does join politics, he is not expected to join the BJP. Sources claim he will launch his own political party. Other  Tamil film stars such as MG Ramachandran (MGR), J Jayalalithaa and M Karunanidhi had gone to become Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu.
