The Maharashtra government has changed the name of three railway stations in Mumbai and plans to rename six more. Oshiwara has been renamed Ram Mandir (the name-change delayed its opening earlier this year); Elphinstone Road has been re-christened Prabhadevi; and Chhtatrapati Shivaji Terminus, which was changed from Victoria Terminus two decades ago, is getting an additional ‘Maharaj’ to its name.

The other proposed changes are:

1. Charni Road to Girgaum

3. Grant Road to Gamdevi

4. Marine Lines to Sonapur

6. Sandhurst Road to Dongri

A senior railway official has said that they have no role in this name-change and that it is decided by the Home Ministry and the State Government. The name-change could be due to the upcoming municipal elections to be held early next year. Politicians have said that they have received demands to add a bit of “local flavour” to these station names.
