The Mahatma Gandhi Mission (MGM) High School located in Nerul is in the news for all the wrong reasons for the past three months. The physical training (PT) teacher at MGM school identified as Harishankar Awadh Shukla, a resident of Koperkhairane, Navi Mumbai allegedly raped a 13-year-old resulting in her becoming pregnant in September.
The incident came to light when the minor complained of stomach pain and nausea to her mother. Her mother took her to a gynecologist, who confirmed the fact that the minor was raped and was four weeks pregnant. The mother complained to the Nerul Assistant Police Inspector (API) Vasudev More about the incident but he did not investigate the matter properly due to the pressure from the school.
On Tuesday, December 13, 2016, Member of Parliament (MP) from Shiv Sena Rajan Vichare along with 500 supporters and the victim’s parents protested in front of MGM School and demanded that stringent action be taken against the school management and the accused. Following the protest, the principal of MGM, Savita Gulathi, was detained by the Nerul police and API More was suspended from the duty for a shoddy investigation. There was a strict bandobast outside the MGM School so that no untoward incidents would take place. Even the Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale was present at the spot to control the situation.
Speaking to Bayside Journal, Rajan Vichare (MP) from Shiv Sena said, “According to the source, apart from raping one student, the accused has allegedly molested at least 18 other minor students at Navi Mumbai–based school. After my intervention in the matter, the API of Nerul, More, has been suspended because of negligence in duty from his side. Now, the crime branch is conducting further investigation in this matter.”
According to the claim of the school girl, she was raped by her PT teacher on several occasions and she did not inform her family and friends because she was threatened of dire consequences. She was raped in the school toilet once in April and again in August.
According to Rajput, senior police inspector of the Crime Branch, “The girl’s mother registered FIR at Nerul police station under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against Shukla. Suddenly after the incident he fled to Delhi. The police tracked his location to Delhi. The accused then fled to Lucknow. He also tried to get anticipatory bail from session’s court but failed in his attempt. Shukla is married and has one son.” Shukla’s whereabouts are not known.
Shocking Revelations Come from Parents
Since date no one has came ahead to complain about the accused, but after the protests, parents of 18 other minors have complained about their daughters being molested by the accused. The role of Nerul Police Station was under suspicion and the case has thus been transferred to the Crime Branch. A police team has been sent to Uttar Pradesh to find the whereabouts of Shukla.
