Two videos recently caught our attention, both about very different viewpoints in sports. One is on individual excellence and the other fun, camaraderie in team work. The first is Michael Phelp’s commercial for Under Armour, a sporting goods brand. Phelps the most decorated Olympian of all time, with 22 medals in 3 Olympiads is shown training hard for the commercial. The video, titled ‘Rule Yourself’ is all about Phelp’s grit and determination to give it all he’s got for his last Olympics.
The second is the South African T20 cricket team’s cover of Pitbull’s 2014 hit Fireball. Strangely, this is the T20 team’s anthem for their forthcoming World Twenty20 campaign in India. The video has the Twenty20 captain Faf du Plessis dressed in a funky leopard-print top holding a mike and lip-syncing the lyrics to the dance hit. Other members of the team are also seen pulling a few awkward dance moves accompanied by cheerleaders. The reason behind this video probably the team’s official hashtag: #ProteaFire.
Australia recently beat the Proteas by 6 wickets and won the T20 international series 2-1 so maybe this video is a much need morale booster for the South Africans. South Africa is ranked third in the ICC T20 and face India on March 12th in their first warm-up game for the ICC World T20 2016.
