Progressive Era in the United States is a period that was characterized by a wide range of political, economic, moral and social reforms. This period lasted between the years the 1890s to 1920s which responded to the changes brought about by industrialization. Progressive era was a national movement with its members from the middle class. It was during this period that many journalists began calling to the attention of massive exploitation that was taking place. Such exploitation included corruption in city governments, child labor ruthless business practices and horror of launching.
Factors that led to progressive movement
As at 1900, there were problems which acted as push factors for the progressive movement. Urban overcrowding especially when it came to housing facilities, with rodent infested rooms created a risky condition for diseases. The emergence of factory system which was very dangerous for the common man since it had no safety measures guiding it. Lack of the municipal government to address the problems of sewage, public health facilities were some of the forces that led to progressive in the United States. To make matters worse the matters further was the swelling of Asian American immigrants which increased the racial and ethnic tensions in America at that time. These pressures pushed many Americans led by the educated to press on the government to act fast, in various sectors such as labor, health, environmental hence the progressive movements (Historical Society, 2009).
Why and how the president changed during the progressive era
President Roosevelt came up with the ‘square deal’ term to deal with social injustices that were taking place at that time. He sought to stop firms that were bad monopolies, which used services that obstructed the free flow pricing mechanism and dominated public services and encouraged good firms that were good monopolies. Roosevelt did this through stopping misuse of military power to combat protests and strikes and by shielding businesses from trade unions. He believed that Americans should share the same rights regardless of wealth and class. No person should be treated inferior because he is poor or has a lesser job than other people. The rich were not happy with the president’s plan, and therefore used lawyers and advertisement to raise their displeasures but it did not work. The president’s policy of equality was common to both the weak and might. He addressed the social problems in the society like criminal uprisings. He invested for the black people both in education and civil rights.
Effects of progressive plan on social reform
During progressive era, many reforms were observed which included the introduction of the farm movement which emerged to compensate for the deteriorating significance of countryside areas in an increasing industrial America. In the Constitution, the effect of progressive era was observed where new amendments were added to the constitution that provided for a way in which senators were to be elected. On government administration, progressive reforms were carried out in the states to the national level where there was an introduction of a secret ballot, referendum and recall were implemented (Historical Society, 2009).
During this era, there was constant intermingling between the social reforms and social control. This was well demonstrated when it came to carrying out major reforms on labor, where the reformists worked against child labor in which many children died in the cause overworking. To parents, this was a bad idea as they depended on more on the money earned from the labor partaken by the children. Furthermore, the employers were not ready to abandon the vice as it was cheap and they were eager to keep their businesses than see the social injustices that were being done on the children.
Effect of progressive on women
At the end of the nineteenth century, women were seen as protectors of homes and moral guardians. The opposition of women suffrage was observed when in eighteen seventy-two, during the presidential election despite not have the legal right to vote, Susan B Anthony went to the ballot which led to her arrest and trial for casting an illegal vote. Women reformers during the progressive period used this platform to join women volunteer organization to work for reform. Extension of suffrage to women and protection of the society through prohibition was also included in the constitution, during this period 1920 after many women organizations such as the national American woman suffrage association (TNWHMP, 2009).
