It’s raining sequels this year, and adding to the list of releases is Kahaani 2, which hit the theatres on November 2. Director Sujoy Ghosh is back with Vidya Balan. We all remember her character Vidya Bagchi from Kahaani, and this time you will see her playing Durga Rani Singh aka Vidya Sinha. Though this movie is part of the same franchise, it isn’t exactly a sequel to the first one.
Vidya Sinha (Vidya Balan) lives with her paralysed daughter in Chandan Nagar. One day, upon returning from work, she finds out that her daughter has been kidnapped. In an attempt to reach the location given to her by the kidnapper, she meets with an accident. Enter Inspector Inderjit Singh (Arjun Rampal), who is given her case to handle. Inderjit mistakes Vidya for Durga Rani Singh. The movie takes an interesting turn when it is revealed that Vidya is a wanted murderer and kidnapper. What’s left for the viewers to find out is the story behind Vidya and Durga.
Kahaani, which released in 2012, still gives me goose bumps and its terrific story has left me praising both the director and the actors for their performance. After its resounding success at the box office, Kahaani 2 is a suspense-thriller that we have been looking forward to since its trailer rolled out. While most sequels that released this year have been disappointments, we tell you why Kahaani 2 is a good watch.
1. For Vidya Balan
The image of a pregnant Vidya desperately searching for her husband in the streets of Kolkata from the first movie is still fresh in my mind. Undoubtedly, when it comes to watching Vidya Balan’s films, you can definitely expect a great script and a character that will be portrayed realistically. Her flawless acting and simplicity are what people look out for in her movies. Vidya Sinha is a normal working woman; she is someone who likes keeping to her herself and is content with the life she has. And yet, there are different shades to her character. Apart from being scared and angry, she is protective and possessive about her daughter. Even when she is being suspected to be a murderer and kidnapper, you will continue to think that she is innocent because of Balan’s effortless acting. With Kahaani 2, Vidya definitely proves that she can shoulder a woman-centric film; she doesn’t need a Khan or a Kapoor in her movie to attract a large audience.
2. For Sujoy Ghosh
You don’t have to be a big fan of director Sujoy Ghosh to want to watch his films. You can always expect his films to be engaging. He is able to translate scripts into the films that are impactful.. You may feel like there are various twists and turns and that too is much happening on-screen, but Ghosh makes sure that the convoluted plot doesn’t lose your interest.. Not for a moment will you feel, “I didn’t get this.” But you will definitely end up exclaiming, “What the hell just happened!”, “Oh, this cannot be happening!”, and “What next, man?”
3. For the Gripping Story
Just like Kahaani, Kahaani 2 has a very interesting story to tell. The suspense and the thrills keep you on the edge of your seat. The first half is so engrossing that the only time you would move your eyes away from your screen would be to exchange a look with the person sitting next to you and say, “God, this story is so good!” In an aggressive but effective manner, the makers of this movie talk about child sexual abuse, which helps to build up the story. The second half of the story is predictable and the climax isn’t jaw-dropping. But still, you wouldn’t leave the theatre because the first half is just that good.
4. Jugal Hansraj, Arjun Rampal and Other Factors
Jugal Hansraj, who was once known as a chocolate boy loved by all the girls, is back after a long gap and it feels good to see him on-screen. But this time, he isn’t playing a romantic hero. His character will leave you surprised. He has definitely essayed his character well.
Arjun Rampal puts up a good performance in Kahaani 2. He makes sure that you remember Inderjit Singh and talk about him even when you leave the theatre.
Tota Roy Choudhury, Kharaj Mukherjee and Naisha Khanna are great and have played their characters fairly well.
5. For the Interval
Are you wondering why I would mention the interval? After watching such a compelling first half and biting your nails in anticipation, you definitely need a break to appreciate the story, actors, and director.
We recommend Kahaani 2 as a good weekend watch.
With a first half that will keep you on the edge of your seat, Kahaani 2 is a paisa-vasool movie. It is a package of thrills and suspense, amazing performances, and a great director. As Vidya Balan put it in The Dirty Picture, this film is “Entertainment, entertainment, entertainment”.
