Old St Nick is supposed to be lovable, jovial, kindly – certainly not rude and even worse, mean to a child. Tell that to Ashley Mayse of North Carolina, USA. Her 9-year-old son, Anthony, was reportedly body shamed by a Santa Claus in a mall.
In Forest City, Anthony, like most children his age, was telling a Santa Claus who had been employed by the town, what he wanted for Christmas. He was asking for an iPod Touch and a drone for Christmas when he was reportedly body shamed, said his family. “Lay off the hamburgers and french fries,” Santa Claus said to Anthony. The boy added “that really just disrespected me, and I felt awful.”
Anthony says he went to bed crying and tore up his picture with the Forest City Santa. He said, “You don’t want to disrespect a 9-year-old. Even though what shape and size you are, it doesn’t matter.” The town manager told News 13 that the ‘Bad Santa’ apologised but Anthony and his mother feel that the apology was not genuine and not enough. His mother wants the Forest City Santa Claus to be fired so that he no longer has the chance to say mean things to children again.
In the U.S., malls often employ a ‘Santa Claus’ for the holiday season. Young children usually sit on his lap and divulge what they want for Christmas and have their picture taken with him.
