The Thane Municipal Corporation will soon start a bicycle service in Thane for its residents. Commuters who wish for an alternative to the city’s bus and auto services will soon be able to hire a bicycle from a bus stop. This bicycles with fitted with GPS systems to prevent theft and to track the location of the user. The bicycle service is expected to be at 50 bus stops in the city.
New Age Media Partner Pvt Ltd has proposed a 20-feet long and 6-feet wide area to park these bicycles. They are also planning to provide bicycles and advertisements for the same.
Thane is the first Indian city to start a bicycle service for commuters and joins the list of 600 cities worldwide that have bicycle-sharing systems. Countries such as Ireland, Germany, and Netherlands have implemented public bike-sharing systems and have met with reasonable success. In most countries, customers pay using special smart cards or credit cards.
