The Met Gala is often referred to as “fashion’s biggest night out” with a host of celebrities walking the red carpet in one of the most watched and photographed events of the year. Each year there is a theme the guests are expected to follow. The 69th annual Met Ball was themed Rei Kawakubo/Commes des Garçons in honour of the Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo. Like many events, there were both fashion hits and misses. We round up the most red carpet looks at this year’s event:

Rihanna

Rihanna’s outfit got a lot of mixed reviews. The floral dress was from the Comme Des Garcons 2016 Fall ready-to-wear collection. Full marks for following the theme to the t.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry’s outfit was the most eye-catching of them all but not in a good way. The weird netting, the word ‘witness’ scrawled across her forehead and those mirrors attached to her head looked like it was from a stoner’s nightmare.

The Olsen Twins

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen looked haggard and very oddly dressed at a rare red carpet appearance. The twins who once made boho-chic trendy in the early 2000s didn’t score any brownie points with fashion critics or fans.

Solange Knowles

Solange won’t feel be feeling cold in her Thom Browne parka dress.

Jaden Smith

Those dreadlocks are actually churros. Was the food at the Met Gala that bad?

Someone, please tell her this is not the Scottish Highland Games.

Helen Lasichanh

Pharrell’s wife’s dress was compared to everything from a Teletubby to an armchair. Her husband is dressed like a 13-year-old boy off to his first party.
