Mukhtaran Mai, a gang-rape victim from Pakistan, recently walked the ramp as a showstopper for the Fashion Pakistan Week. Mai, now a women’s rights activist wore traditional wedding gear designed by Rozina Munib. Mai wore clothes a regular woman would wear for a wedding. Rozina told Dawn: “The purpose behind bringing her to Karachi and making her a part of my show is to tell her story so that it gives courage to other women.”

“It is Mukhtaran’s story that inspired me to call my collection ‘Zindagi ke Rang’, added Munib. Mukhtaran was gang-raped in 2002 on orders of a tribal council as repatriation for her 12-year-old brother allegedly having an affair with a girl of a superior tribe. The accused were acquitted by the Supreme Court. Mai now runs a woman’s shelter in Muzaffargarh district and has now since remarried.
