India Wins Junior Hockey World Cup

This is the second time they have lifted the Cup

India defeated Belgium 2-1 and won the 2016 Hockey Junior World Cup which was held at Lucknow’s Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium. Gurjant Singh and Simranjeet Singh were the two goal-scorers of the match, scoring at the 8th and 22nd minute respectively and India maintained their 2-0 lead till halftime. Fabrice Van Bockjack was Belgium’s sole goal-scorer in the 77th minute. The win marks the first time a country has won the Cup on home soil.

With this win, India has maintained their 100 percent success rate in the tournament. This is their second Junior World Cup win since 2001. In 1997, they had lost to Australia in the finals. This was Belgium’s first Junior World Cup final. They had secured a final berth by defeating six-time champions and defending champions Germany 4-3.
