J Jayalalitha has passed away at the age of 68 on December 5 at 11:30 p.m. The late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa suffered a cardiac arrest on December 4. She was on an external life support system that provides cardiac and respiratory support to persons whose heart and lungs are unable to draw air. Unfortunately, specialists were not able to revive her and she passed away.
She was laid to rest with a state funeral with full honours at Marina Beach, Chennai, and buried next to her mentor MG Ramachandaran. Her close aide, Sasikala Natarajan, performed the last rites. A seven-day mourning has been declared in Tamil Nadu and schools and colleges are to be closed for three days.
The Tamil Nadu CM had been in hospital for 75 days. She was first admitted on September 22 for fever and dehydration. On November 19, she was shifted out of the ICU, and it was expected that she would get back to her official duties as CM soon. On December 4, AIADMK party spokesperson C Ponnaiyan told reporters that she had completely recovered and would be discharged soon. The very same evening, she suffered a cardiac arrest.
Former Tamil Nadu CM, O Panneerselvam, is Jayalalithaa’s successor and the current Chief Minister.
