Manisha Koirala to Play Nargis in Sanjay Dutt Biopic

The latest updates on the biopic and some exclusive details from an inside source

Rajkumar Hirani’s upcoming film, a Sanjay Dutt biopic, has been creating a buzz in B-town since its announcement. There is no doubt that this film is one of the most awaited films of 2017 with Ranbir Kapoor will be seen portraying Sanjay Dutt on the silver screen.

Hirani has now confirmed that Manisha Koirala will play Sanjay Dutt’s late mother Nargis Dutt in the biopic. He told Mumbai Mirror that Koirala will be able to do justice to the role since she is a cancer survivor herself.

Manisha Koirala, who was a popular film star in 90s Bollywood was last seen in Tamil film Oru Melliya Koduwoich in 2016Her last major Bollywood film was 2012’s Bhooth Returns.

Sanjay Dutt has reportedly given 200 hours of recording as basic matter for the biopic and was toying with idea of playing his father Sunil Dutt in the biopic. But he has dropped the idea reports Times of India.

The film’s shooting is underway and the fact that Ranbir is going to play the lead has been makisng ripples for a while now. No one knows what Ranbir’s look for the movie will be like. While some claim that the actor has gained weight for this character and is going to sport a bulky look, others say that he getting his skin tanned and is growing his hair.

A source very close to the film tells Bayside Journal, “Rajkumar Hirani has been very particular about this project and is fiercely guarding each and every detail about it. Ranbir is playing Sanju Baba and since the time he was cast, the younger actor has been tensed. There was a time when he used to call Sanju Baba multiple times every day. If it was up to Ranbir, he would spend all his time with Sanjay until the film is shot. There came a time when Sanjay started avoiding Ranbir altogether.”

Another interesting tid-bit about the movie is that Sanjay Dutt’s affair with Madhuri Dixit will not be a part of it. “They were one of the most talked-about couples in the 90s but viewers won’t get to see that bit in the film,” shares the source.

Ranbir will essay the time Sanjay spent at Yerwada Jail. Though many were of the view that Sanjay was personally training the younger actor for the role, the source maintains that Sanjay has kept his distance from the project as he has faith in the director.

While another source stated that the detachment from Sanjay’s end is because of the history the Dutts and the Kapoors share. “It is a well-known fact that Raj Kapoor and Nargis were attached to each other. However, things never went to the next level despite Raj Kapoor loving Nargis because he was married to Krishna Kapoor. Soon Nargis and Sunil fell in love, and got married. It is since then that the two families share cold relations.”

We all know Sanjay Dutt was a sensation during his hay days and whatever he did became headlines. There was a time when his long hair look from Khalnayak inspired many. When he experimented with a mohawk and wore a vest, everyone followed suit.

“Getting Sanjay’s personality perfectly from 80s and 90s is not at all easy and the makers were very clear that they wanted Ranbir to get his body in shape in a natural manner. When many suggested the use of prosthetics for the perfect look, Hirani was against this. Ranbir will have to work hard to get that look in a natural manner, or else there is no movie,” shares the source.

Ranbir has been following a strict diet plan and workout routine. He has been consuming a lot of protein and his workout regime has undergone a massive change. “He has been advised what to eat and what not to eat. He is also working on his voice modulation. In fact, Hirani has asked him to meet all those people Sanjay had a close equation with to understand the older actor’s story and know him on a personal level. The real Sanjay is not known to many; there are so many layers to his personality and Ranbir needs to show this side of the actor on-screen,” says the source.

The makers had cast Akshay Khanna to play Sunil Dutt’s role; however, the actor is no longer a part of the project. “Hirani wanted to show a track of Dutt Sahib and Sanjay as both shared a beautiful relationship. Akshay was the first choice, but after the screen test and other preparations, the makers realised that he didn’t fit the bill,” says the source.

The untitled biopic is already creating curiosity among the fans and the industry alike. The movie will be completed in the span of eight months and after the post-production, it will mostly clash at the box office with Salman Khan’s Tiger Zinda Hai in 2017 Christmas.
