Maharashtra is facing its worst drought crisis in years with the monsoon failing for two consecutive years. Water storage in Marathwada (one of the most affected regions) resorvoirs is just five per cent. The situation in Vidharaba, Beed and Osmanabad districts is also grim. It comes as no surprise that the Maharashtra government has ordered the shutting down of supply of water to swimming pools and lavish rain dance parties this year.
Water resources Minister Ganesh Mahajan said,”There is a water problem in Maharashtra. Letters have been given to municipal officers that swimming pools should be stopped,”. Water tankers should also not be provided for rain dance parties said Mahajan. State government officials have said that stopping supply of water is not mandatory but will be up to the municipal corporations.
The Pune Municipal Corporation and the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has already decided to stop supplying water to swimming pools attached to their corporations. Mumbai’s BMC has also imposed a 15 per cent cut in water supply.
Well, it would just have to be a dry Holi then, but we are not complaining.
