Recipe: How to Make Authentic Hyderabadi Mirchi Ka Salan

A step-by-step guide on how to make the fiery Andhra classic

Hyderabadi Mirchi Ka Salan is a spicy curry made out of green chillies that is usually served as an accompaniment to biriyani. The spicy, tangy curry can be relished with rotis as well. Below is a detailed step-by-step guide to making the famous dish




10-15 Green Chillies
2 tbsp Coriander Powder (dhaniya)
1 tbsp Cumin seeds (jeera)
2 tbsp Sesame seeds (teel)
3/4 cup Peanuts
1/4 cup Tamarind (imli)
1 tbsp Turmeric (haldi)
1/4 tbsp Red Chilli Powder (laal mirch)
1 tbsp Ginger Garlic Paste
1/2 tbsp Mustard seeds
1/2 cup Curry leaves
1 sliced Tomato
Salt to taste
1/2 cup Vegetable oil
1/2 cup Coriander freshly chopped



i. Dry roast peanuts, sesame seeds, coriander powder and cumin seeds on a slow flame.

ii. Put the ingredients in the blender.

iii. Add chopped ginger and garlic.

iv. Make a nice fine paste.


v. Add ½ cup vegetable oil in hot pan

vi. Add mustard seeds

vii. Add sliced chillies  (seeds removed), then add curry leaves

viii. Half fry for 5 minutes on a high flame

ix. Remove the chillies

x. Use the same pan to make the curry


xi. Add red mirchi powder, turmeric and salt

xii. Pour the mixture and mix well

xiii. Cook for about 10 minutes on a slow flame

xiv. Add curry leaves and 2 sliced tomatoes

xv. Cook till the oil separates from the mixture


xvi. Add tamarind pulp (cook for 2 minutes)

xviii. Add the fried chillies and mix well

xix. Simmer for 5 minutes
