I use Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat on a daily basis. I check in to these apps around 4:30 PM in the evening when I get back from school and check out of them at 10 PM, that’s around the time I sleep.

I check my Snapchat after school and Facebook is just before I go to bed at night. I keep checking Instagram at various times: After school, before going down to play, coming back after playing, and again before I go to sleep. Sometimes it’s in tandem with Facebook.

I have 185 friends on Facebook and I Snapchat with over 30 people. On Instagram I have 98 followers.

While it may look like I am addicted to social media sites and apps, the truth is that I don’t really spend a lot of time on them. I use them because they help me keep in touch with friends that I don’t meet personally every day. I go to a lot of conferences and camps. I am part of an organisation called the Round Square Conference that is a world-wide association of schools across the world. I have travelled South to Africa with them. Recently, I also travelled to Chandigarh to be part of a conference. Obviously, it’s difficult to keep in touch with these people personally. Facebook helps a lot over here. I use Facebook for keeping in touch with friends who are really far away from Mumbai or I do not know them properly, like people I meet in conferences or camps.

Snapchat is for my best buddies and people I am comfortable with. I use Instagram for both keeping in touch with my friends and to make new friends. It’s a great way to find new and interesting people.

I don’t use sites other than the ones I mentioned because these are convenient enough for me to contact my friends and I do not need anything else. I used Whataspp, Kik and Skype when I had a smartphone. I realised I don’t need a smartphone and gave it up. Now, I have a Dell computer and an i-pad. I use the computer for Facebook and my i-pad for Snapchat and Instagram.

I used to spend a lot of time on social media apps when I had a phone but now one and a half hours in a day is enough for me to talk to my friends. I spend 15 minutes a day on Facebook and 30 minutes on Snapchat. With Instagram, I check it several times a day but it never goes beyond 10 minutes at a time. So even if I check it four times a day, it takes less than 45 mins.

I send around 50 texts a day via Snapchat. I don’t use my i-pad a lot so the number of texts I send everyday is less. My parents monitor me quite often with what I am surfing online or with people I am talking to. My mom used to think I used to spend a lot of time on social media when I had a phone but now that I have given it up, she is totally fine about how much time I spend on them.

I think one reason why I am not addicted to these apps is because I am really good at sports and do not want to compromise on that. I play sports everyday for two hours.
